The Purchasing department’s goal is to obtain the right material, in the right quantities, at the right time, and for the right cost. Furthermore, it is Purchasing’s responsibility to find qualified sources to provide the materials.

However, it is the responsibility of engineers, chemists, and scientists to develop and provide specifications of the materials so that the Purchasing department can ensure that the company receives the right materials.

In a like manner, the Planning Department provides scheduling data so that Purchasing can properly schedule the delivery of materials to the production facility.
